First Sunday of Advent

‘Advent’, meaning ‘coming or ‘arrival’, is a focus for most Western Christians on the celebration of the First Advent (birth) of Jesus Christ, as well as the anticipation of his Second Advent.

Advent wreaths are common at this time and symbolise new and everlasting life, while the five candles around and inside the wreaths represent the light of God coming into the world through the birth of Jesus. Christian children often enjoy using colourful Advent calendars to mark each day of the period.
