There are approximately 1.5 billion followers of the Islamic faith in the world today and the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca and the fifth pillar of Islam, is required at least once in a lifetime by all able bodied Muslims who can afford to do so. Every year, over 2 million people perform the sacred pilgrimage, making it the largest in the world. The Hajj consists of a series of deeply symbolic ritual acts and it has been noted that the practice promotes peaceful coexistence, equality and harmony
