St Valentine’s Day

Rather than being romantic, the origins of today’s highly commercial custom of exchanging cards and gifts with lovers on Valentine’s Day are thought to be two Early Christian martyrs, both called Valentine. In fact, there is no evidence of any romantic links to this day until the High Middle Ages when the notion of ‘courtly love’ flourished; although it is also said a Roman Christian martyr was executed on February 14 and left a note for his beloved friend, the jailer’s daughter, signed “From Your Valentine”.
