Ensuring DEI is at the forefront of your systems, policies, and processes

Embedding DEI principles into every aspect of an organisation may seem like an overwhelming task, even for those dedicated to creating inclusive work environments. Yet, if DEI is not entrenched into the design and execution of all business systems, policies and processes, it is impossible to achieve lasting change, and you could be undermining the effectiveness of other DEI initiatives.

Many organisations rely on training and awareness programs only, assuming it will drive people to embed DEI in everything they do; but this becomes highly dependent on individual leaders and is rarely sufficient to create lasting change.

Symmetra offers a range of solutions to help organisations build the awareness, insight, and motivation to incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion as a robust and reliable instituional practice.

Challenges to Systemic Change

Implementing best practices and removing systemic and behavioral obstacles to diversity and inclusion can be difficult. When trying to integrate DEI into systems, policies, processes, and measures organisations are often met by:

Failure to recognise the problem

Many organisations do not have an accurate assessment of how inclusive their systems really are. Their existing approach usually appears to be fair and often the biases and inequities within them are subtle and context dependent.

Resistance to change

It is human nature for people to resist making changes, especially if leaders feel existing systems have served them well. Without the buy-in and strong communication from leadership, it will be difficult to reform existing structures.

Fear of complexity

In comparison to training solutions, systems and process change is a more complex problem, requiring patience, persistence and iteration - often working with many stakeholders and in some cases through complicated regulatory requirements.

Lack of long term commitment

Systemic change is inherently outcome based, which means it requires a long-term commitment to implement and measure its impact on tangible diversity and inclusion metrics. For many other DEI initiatives the outcome is simply doing the activity itself, which feels like a quick win by comparison.

Why Training is not Enough

DEI training is an important part of any DEI strategy, but not enough on its own. Research demonstrates that in isolation, training has limited long term effectiveness. It can ignore the incentives, power dynamics and policies that perpetuate inequity and may even encourage biased behaviours, and place too much emphasis on personal responsibility without acknowledging what is outside the control of individual employees.

Ensuring all your systems, structures and processes promote inclusive behaviour and outcomes, and are free from inadvertent biases and blind spots -This requires a concerted and collaborative change process along with specific knowledge and guidance of innovative best practices – typically not the scope of a DEI training program.
