Microaggressions

Microaggressions harm individuals from marginalised groups in the workplace. These subtle verbal, nonverbal, or environmental messages stem from racial, gender, and sexual orientation biases that exist in individuals and the organisation. Over time, they can decrease productivity, morale, and create a hostile work environment. People who regularly deal with microaggressions often experience feelings of anger, anxiety, helplessness, and hopelessness, which may lead to decreases in engagement and work performance.

Symmetra provides microaggression training, workshops, toolkits, and workplace activities to help increase awareness of these subtle exclusionary behaviours, and develop the necessary skills to move from unconscious exclusion to consistent inclusion. Participants learn to recognise microaggressions in themselves and others, and develop the necessary speak-up behaviours to effectively challenge them and create an inclusive and equitable workplace.

Start Eliminating Microaggressions Today!

Key Features of Microaggression Training

Microaggression training is essential for creating a safe and respectful workplace. Our training equips all team members with the tools to recognise microaggressions, develop speak-up behaviours, and promote understanding, acceptance, and compassion in the workplace.

Awareness and Capability

Our training helps people recognise and identify microaggressions in their own work experience, then builds the ability to respond effectively when they occur.

Inclusion Pulse Assessment

Benchmarked assessments that measure the observed behaviours of inclusion or exclusion within teams, which creates the accountability for change and allows measurement over time.

Toolkits and Activities

Digital toolkits and self-led experiential activities enable teams to apply learning, practice new habits, discuss problematic behaviours and reinforce the skills to respond to microaggressions constructively.

Online Learning

Videos and interactive learning enable continual reinforcement of new inclusion knowledge and habits, ensuring inclusive behaviours are embedded within the culture.

The Costs of Microaggressions

Greater absenteeism and employee turnover

Feelings of being undervalued due to microaggressions may cause some employee to feel less motivated to show up for work or they may choose to leave the organisation entirely.

Negative impact on productivity and collaboration

Erosion of trust and faith in an employer and colleagues can make individuals less likely to work effectively with those they feel excluded or undervalued by.

Increase in mental and physical health issues

Stress caused by indirect statements or acts of discrimination may cause some to experience health matters such as exhaustion, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and high blood pressure.

Obligation for Positive Duty of Care

Organisations may have a positive duty of care to prevent and address microaggressions in the workplace to avoid legal risks, reputational damage, and financial penalties.

How Our Training Delivers Results

Symmetra’s microaggression solutions educate ALL employees on recognising and appropriately responding to various forms of microaggressions, embedding cultures of acceptance to counteract conscious and unconscious prejudice and unfair practices at an organisational level.
